Tyler Nelson, DDS

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Dr. Tyler Nelson is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is thrilled to be practicing in and serving the wonderful community of North County San Diego.

Dr. Nelson received his Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish from BYU. He had planned to teach Spanish, but life had different plans. One of the requirements of a career exploration class he took was to investigate different professionals in their offices. After exploring a career in oral surgery, Dr. Nelson set his mind on a new career path and he is so glad he stuck with it.

During dental school at University of the Pacific, San Francisco, Dr. Nelson served as class president each year, and as Student Body President during his senior year. He graduated with high honors, and was accepted into the 4-year oral and maxillofacial surgery program at Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA.

During residency, Dr. Nelson was trained in IV sedation, dental implants, removal of difficult teeth, facial trauma and orthognathic (jaw repositioning) surgery. He also presented research on jaw tumors and imaging modalities for diagnosis of mandibular fractures. He is a board certified diplomate of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Tyler Nelson is happily married to Natalie, his college sweetheart. Together, they are proud parents of 6 wonderful, energetic children. Dr. Nelson enjoys time with his family at the beach, and can be found playing pickleball, running, biking, and snowboarding.

Wisdom Teeth

Nearly all of us inevitably have to deal with bothersome wisdom teeth at some point. Most of us simply don’t have enough space in our jaws for them. In most cases, they erupt (come into the mouth) during late teens or early twenties.  The lack of space causes impaction of the teeth, painful infections, decay, bone loss, crowding, damage to adjacent teeth and more complications. If it is obvious that they will cause issues in the future, removing the teeth before problems arise is usually the recommended treatment. Even if you’re not a “spring chicken” anymore, we can definitely still help you remove your wisdom teeth.

Dental Implants

Missing teeth can cause so much more than a gap in your smile. When a tooth is missing, there is a “domino effect” of shifting of other teeth, periodontal bone loss, decreased nutrition due to limitations of chewing, and sometimes loss of self-esteem if the missing tooth is in an area of esthetic concern. Let us help you get your bite, smile and life back!

New Smile in a Day

If your smile needs a complete overhaul, we have the treatment for you! When your remaining teeth cannot be saved, Dr. Tyler Nelson can offer you state-of-the-art treatment which will leave you with new teeth secured by multiple dental implants all in the same day. Talk about having something to smile about! Don’t be surprised to find that you smile so much more, after this life-changing treatment.

IV sedation
Sleep Dentistry

For some reason, most humans don’t enjoy sharp objects being poked into their mouths, while enduring painful dentist jokes. If either of these thoughts create anxiety in you, rest assured that there is a better way. With the help of modern sedation techniques,  you can sail through your procedure with ease. Say goodbye to stress, anxiety and pain. Believe it or not, you’ll probably enjoy “going to the dentist” when you experience how easy this is.
